Is IoT a bubble?
For the last three years I had been hearing the word “Internet of Things”, “Internet of Everything” or simple we call it as “IoT”, whatever it’s just adding sense to a real-world objects that results getting an amount of data through network and provide an option to make a wise decision. That’s it? I had a lot of questions when I first come across this new technological bubble
- What common people like us getting from this?
- How does it ensure the Security and Privacy?
- How does it add value to Organization?
- Who exactly benefited from this?
- Is it really making sense?
- Why do we need it?
- And the list goes on..?
When I start digging more about IoT most of my questions were answerable and of course few my questions are still stale. During the course of my learning, there were new words adding to my basket “Data Science”, “Artificial Intelligence”, “Data Clustering”,”Data Sensing”,”Machine Learning”, “Numerical Analysis” and etc. After a couple of months of research, I came to know that IoT has potential to be next pioneer in tech world so there is no doubt about it.
Global Consulting firm Boston Consulting Group(BCG) forecast IoT market will grow from an installed base of 15.4 billion devices in 2015 to 30.7 billion devices in 2020 and 75.4 billion in 2025. The influence of IoT is pervasive throughout all kind of industries.
Now I don’t want to explain what is IoT and what are the pros and cons of IoT, probably you can ask google for that, instead, we need to understand here a real-world scenario where how IoT tackle the complexity of that issue. Till the date, we just use our PC’s, Laptops, and some kind of Cellular devices for communicating across the network nevertheless in typical IoT integration we use every possible object to communicate via the network. Now we would look into the recent time’s scenario of WannaCry ransomware attack which targets computers all around the world by encrypting data and demanding ransom payments in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. The attack started on Friday, 12 May 2017 and within a day was reported to have infected more than 230,000 computers in over 150 countries.
The WannaCry attack makes all of us cry for just using computers which had a network, therefore, imagine a situation where all the real world objects come under the umbrella of networks where every object communicate to other objects If something like wanna cry happen than consequences are really abysmal.
- What happens If we are getting wrong statistics during natural calamities
- What happens when credit or debit card purchase without your consent
- What happens when healthcare devices prescribe the wrong medicine
- What happens when a driverless car took the wrong decision
- What happens when some stranger knew anything about us
Most of the IT companies already offering IoT solution to all sort of clients including Government, BFSI, Travel, Healthcare and etc. Unquestionably we all are welcoming IoT but we need a solution that offers the certain level of guarantee for positive impact on our lives or organization. Instead of offering solution to IoT problem in a typically haphazard manner, we need to build a strong independent system that is less prone to risk.
